Frequently Asked Questions
What platforms are supported?
PrivacyGuard runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.6+) and Mac (macOS 13.5+). An Apple Silicon Mac or ARM64 device is required — Intel Macs are not supported.
Does the app collect my data?
No. PrivacyGuard processes everything on your device. There are no analytics, no tracking, no network calls, and no accounts.
How does encryption work?
The Cleaner feature can encrypt detected PII using AES-256-GCM encryption via Apple’s CryptoKit framework. Encrypted text appears as [ENC:...] markers. The 256-bit encryption key is stored securely in your device’s Keychain.
Can I recover encrypted text?
Yes. Text encrypted with the Cleaner’s encrypt mode is reversible. Use the decrypt function with the same key to restore the original text. Other redaction styles (blocks, asterisks, brackets) are permanent.
Why does the macOS version need Full Disk Access?
Full Disk Access is only required for iMessage scanning. The app reads the local chat.db file, which macOS protects with this permission. If you don’t need iMessage scanning, the app works without it.
What types of PII does the Scanner detect?
PrivacyGuard detects email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, IP addresses, dates of birth, passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, physical addresses, person names, and organization names. You can also define custom patterns.
Does the app work offline?
Yes, completely. PrivacyGuard makes zero network requests. You can use it in Airplane Mode with full functionality.
