abLunar Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 October 2026
abLunar is a privacy-first moon-phase app. All lunar calculations run on your device, and we never receive any of your data.
What we collect
Nothing is collected by us. abLunar has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party SDKs. The app has no server of its own and never sends your data to us or to any third party.
Location
If you grant permission, abLunar reads your device location (when-in-use only) to calculate the Moon's position, rise and set times, and visibility for where you are. These calculations happen entirely on your device.
To show the name of your nearest city, abLunar uses Apple's built-in reverse-geocoding service (MapKit), which sends your coordinates to Apple and returns a place name. This lookup is handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy; abLunar does not store the result on any server, and your location is never sent to us, shared with third parties, or sold.
If you subscribe to abLunar Pro and search for another city, the text you type is sent to Apple's MapKit search service to find matching places, again under Apple's Privacy Policy. abLunar never receives your searches.
You can deny or revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings. The app then shows the Moon for a default location (Cupertino), marked “approx.”
Calendar
If you subscribe to abLunar Pro and choose Add to Calendar in Moon plan, abLunar asks for permission to add events only. With this access iOS lets the app add the moon events you picked to your default calendar, but abLunar cannot see, read or change anything else in your calendar. You can revoke this at any time in iOS Settings, or share a calendar file instead, which needs no permission.
Photos
“The Moon that night” uses the system photo picker, so abLunar sees only the photo you choose and never your library; no Photos permission is requested. The app reads the photo's date and, if the photo includes one, its location, to work out the Moon at that moment. This happens on your device and the photo is not stored or uploaded. If the photo has a location, abLunar asks Apple's MapKit service for the place name and time zone, under Apple's Privacy Policy. You can turn off “Location Included” in the picker to share the photo without its location.
Saving to Photos
If you save a moon card from Share this moon, abLunar asks for permission to add images to your photo library. It can only add the image you chose to save; it cannot see your other photos.
Notifications
Moon alerts (abLunar Pro, off by default) are local notifications worked out on your device. abLunar asks for notification permission the first time you turn an alert on, never at launch. Background App Refresh is used only to reschedule them. Nothing is sent to a server.
Siri, Spotlight and Shortcuts
When you ask abLunar a question through Siri, Spotlight or Shortcuts, the answer is worked out on your device from the same calculations as the app.
Purchases
abLunar Pro is an auto-renewing subscription sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. abLunar never sees your payment details; it only receives from Apple whether your subscription is active.
Data stored on your device
Your preferences (such as units and time format) are saved locally on your device using Apple's standard storage. If you use abLunar's widgets, your last location, rounded to about 1 km, is also saved on your device so the widgets can show the Moon for where you are. Cities you save (abLunar Pro), and a list of the moon events already added to your calendar (so they aren't added twice), and how many free photo lookups you've used, are stored on your device too. This data stays on your device and is included only in your own encrypted device backups, if you use them.
Children
abLunar does not collect any personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
